I agree.. Azusa is such an evil jerk.. I'm only in Day 7 and it's a struggle to continue his story line... They made the Main Character painfully stupid this time, and the "boyfriend" insane and evil. (Seriously, the Main Character is IMPOSSIBLE dumb!! She's been in danger so many times and NEVER once did she think to touch the magic earrings?? Never once did she try to get help? And Amelia, I get she "meant well", but dang she is a busy body!

But given that I've never paid them any money - I started with Luca, who offended me immensely in his own ways, and resolved immediately never to give them a cent for WH as long as they support this kind of writing and these kinds of themes - I guess maybe I'll stick around and just keep not paying them for crappy work like this.

I had a *much* easier time with Luca's story after getting to the point where you find out he essentially spent his childhood in captivity. It makes sense that he'd have a hard time connecting with other people and got tunnel-vision for finding his mother's past. At least you see a progression of him expanding his bubble to include the MC. Even if he does still cover moments where he doesn't know how to react by being sarcastic and throwing out his apathy shield.
DeleteMy main issue is how badly this MC suffers from Too Stupid To Live syndrome. The only "talent" they show is her talking to animals, yet they never use that. Instead, they focus on her being so bad at magic that she might as well not have it. There isn't progress or improvement in her character; instead, the focus is all on the One True Love.
Azusa's storyline really is just glorifying an abusive relationship. There isn't a shift in him that suggests the evil was a possession that he chose to fight. It's all "I knew it was wrong, I just didn't care." And yeah, the lack of consequences bothers the living hell out of me. They didn't even bother to do something like seal his magic or show he could stay if he agrees to be confined or straight up deported. (Since that's what they jeep saying is the "worst" that would happen.)
I have a hard enough time reading the MC storyline without having an unrepentant jackwagon showcased as someone to aspire to "love." I might give this next character a chance, but it would have to be amazing to get me to keep this one.

DeleteDoes anyone know if choosing to keep the Persona Mirror in 10-10 has any effect on the story? Seems strangely like it could. I'm sure I'll have enough intimacy/Aneuristy for the happy ending if I'd like if I make the lesser intimacy choice to give it back, but I'm curious if anyone knows if it makes a difference, however small, in the story. Unless the MC completely ignores it after the end of the chapter, it kinda has to impact the story...
ReplyDeleteNo idea if it does, but having chosen the 'wrong' option in the choice where neither option has an effect on your Intimacy level, I have to say that the differences for choosing some answers certainly can be dramatic in this route. So who knows?
DeleteI like Azusa's story. Some people would give anything for even one more minute with the one they love. The MC was just like Azusa except she loved him enough to give up her own life, pride, and even morals to attempt to protect him and save him on her own. She saw him with her heart, not just her eyes and felt the pain, suffering, and need for love and saving that he was truly needing. Demons, darkness, evil can can twist and confuse mere mortals. I thought the idea of the MC love and brave, loving intentions to find the true man behind the monster's mask. It's a great story of love and forgiveness bringing a loved one from the brink of madness and evil possession.

DeleteIt's a story of abuse, romanticizing the idea that if a victim is loving and patient enough with their abuser, the abuser will eventually respond to their affections and reform. It outright implies on several occasions that, if Azusa goes through with killing her, it's because SHE screwed up.
Not only is this a REPUGNANT message that implies abuse victims just don't treat their abusers right, it's unrealistic. Abusers in real life rarely reform, and when they do it's not because the people they love ENABLED their abuse - often it's because they find that their loved ones WON'T tolerate it. Abuse victims in real life who followed the protagonist's example would be far more likely to end up dead than in a happy relationship. The game itself implies that the protagonist's good ending with Azusa is a statistical anomaly compared to all the alternate timelines where things ended HORRIFICALLY.
And then Azusa gets REWARDED for all his horrific actions - punishment is mentioned but never happens. Plus he's freed of his terrible grief and burden, and is able to live a happier life! The protagonist's reward? A happy, non-abusive romance!...which she could have had without any of the miserable rigmarole beforehand if she'd been with ANYONE ELSE. (Example: Both Goldsteins took pains to look after her well-being, encouraging and helping her when she needed it - usually because of Azusa. Why choose Azusa over men capable of showing you consideration and concern? A preference for brunets?) Her 'reward' was something she deserved to have in the first place, without having to suffer to 'earn' it. It's a story of abuse where the abuser gets rewarded and the victim gets a pat on the head for sticking it out until it stopped hurting, as though letting people abuse you is something to be encouraged as a GOOD thing.

DeleteI really wanted to like Azusa, but the first time he pushed her, I was done. I know it's a game, but girls of all ages play this game. I don't want them to think that it is OK to stay with an abuser. It is not! When Azusa choked her, the right thing to do is to report to the authority, not stay around hoping to change him!
I'm only sticking though to collect his CG. Ugh. Hate him more than Luca, who is such a jerk. The only boyfriends who are decent are Yukiya (who is sweet through and through) and Klaus (who actually helped the protagonist improve her magical ability). Mayyybe Randy, he is quite fun and harmless, except he did kinda lied about who he truly is....
Anyways, if you choose to go on broomstick ride with Klaus on day 9, you get a nice romantic scene. Quite a breath of fresh air from the evil, gloomy Azusa. This is so 50 Shades of Grey, which by the way, is not what a loving healthy relationship should be.
Elias is also nice too. He was helping the protagonist with her magic too. They had those after class lessons where she turned him into a baby pig, which was adorable by the way. Yes he only helped her after she got that mirror but its understandable since he has trust issues. He's only been around people who cared about his family's name or being compared to his older brothers so of course that piss him off. The same would happen with anybody if they were in that situation.
